Judicial Backlog Eased: Telangana National Lok Adalat Resolves Record 9.28 Lakh Disputes, Awards ₹422 Crore Compensation

HYDERABADIn a monumental stride toward reducing the massive pendency of cases in the formal judiciary, the second National Lok Adalat of the year concluded across Telangana on June 20, 2026, with an extraordinary disposal record. Organized by the Telangana State Legal Services Authority (TSLSA), the single-day swift alternative dispute resolution (ADR) drive successfully brought a permanent closure to over 9.28 lakh disputes. The massive effort culminated in aggregate compensation awards worth ₹422 crore distributed to various beneficiaries and litigants.

Official statistics revealed that a total of 9,28,322 matters reached an amicable resolution. The output reflects a strategic approach to tackling different tiers of legal backlogs. Out of the total cleared cases, 3,80,292 were resolved at the pre-litigation stage, stopping them from entering the formal system. The remaining 5,48,030 disputes were pending court cases that have now been permanently struck off the dockets.

To facilitate this enormous volume of settlements, the administration set up 353 specialized Lok Adalat benches throughout the state. This network comprised 349 benches spread across various judicial districts, two exclusive benches at the Telangana High Court, and two special benches stationed at the Debt Recovery Tribunals (DRT) in Hyderabad. The campaign operated under the guiding leadership of Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, Patron-in-Chief of TSLSA, along with Executive Chairman Justice P. Sam Koshy, and High Court Legal Services Committee Chairman Justice K. Lakshman.

The forum showcased its effectiveness by handling high-stakes and highly complex litigations alongside routine matters. A standout outcome included the successful resolution of a 16-year-old criminal dispute originating from the Habeeb Nagar Police Station in 2009. Through persistent judicial counseling, the involved parties reached a comprehensive compromise, closing three interlocking legal contentions simultaneously. Furthermore, at the High Court level, benches led by Justice Renuka Yara and Justice Suddala Chalapathi Rao resolved 176 pending motor accident claim appeals, granting an aggregate compensation of ₹8.96 crore.

Legal specialists observed that the mass settlement offers critical relief because Lok Adalat awards carry the binding authority of a civil court decree and are legally non-appealable, ensuring immediate closure. Ch. Panchakshari, Member Secretary of TSLSA, noted that the high settlement figures offer instantaneous relief to litigants by saving them from long-drawn, expensive court battles. Crucially, it unburdens the lower trial courts, allowing them to redirect their resources toward complex, non-compoundable litigations.
